Calculate an MEXT-style GPA by assigning each included course 0–3 points and averaging with its credit weight. Use this calculator when your host university’s application instructions specify the matching conversion table.
Confirm your route first. The 2.30 threshold appears in the university application guidelines linked below. It is not a universal eligibility verdict for every MEXT category or embassy application.
Choose the correct grade table.
The patterns below appear in Kumamoto University’s 2026 doctoral application information, page 3. Match the approved pattern to your transcript; letter count alone is not enough. The calculator writes the point value beside each grade so you can check it before calculating.
| Pattern | 3 points | 2 points | 1 point | 0 points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A/B/C/F | A | B | C | F |
| A/B/C/D/F | A and B | C | D | F |
| S/A/B/C/F | S and A | B | C | F |
| Four percentage bands | 80–100 | 70–<80 | 60–<70 | Below 60 |
| Five percentage bands | 80–<90 and 90–100 | 70–<80 | 60–<70 | Below 60 |
Percentage intervals are written without gaps for decimal marks. If your institution rounds marks before assigning a band, follow its instructions. If your system uses different pass marks, plus/minus grades, or an unmatched legend, ask the host university for the correct mapping.
How to calculate MEXT GPA
GPA = sum of (MEXT points × included course credits) ÷ total included course credits. A failed graded course assigned zero points contributes zero to the numerator but still contributes its counted credits to the denominator.
For example, three 3-credit courses with assigned points 3, 2, and 1 give (9 + 6 + 3) ÷ 9 = 2.00. Changing the last course to 3 points gives (9 + 6 + 9) ÷ 9 = 2.6666…; rounded down to two decimal places, the display is 2.66.
Credits, exclusions, and rounding
Kumamoto’s instructions permit subject counts when a grading system has no units, exclude evaluations outside the conversion table, and require rounding down to two decimal places. The calculator follows that rounding rule. Choose course-count mode only if it applies to your record.
Use “Excluded result” only where your instructions require exclusion. Do not remove an F grade as though it were an ungraded pass. The result shows the total weight and number of included and excluded rows so you can check the denominator.
Which academic years should you include?
Use the period specified by your application. Akita University’s 2026 guidelines, section 15, refer to the final or current academic record of the relevant course. They do not support a blanket instruction to use only the last two years. Ask the host university if your record spans multiple qualifications or institutions.
What does the 2.30 result mean?
Akita’s guidelines specify a 2.30 academic threshold alongside other requirements. The tool checks that numerical boundary using the unrounded weighted result. A result of 2.2999 remains below it; displaying a value to two decimals must not turn a lower result into a pass.
Meeting this number does not establish eligibility, nomination, or selection. The study in Japan’s official MEXT overview distinguishes embassy and university recommendation routes and directs applicants to the applicable guidelines. Check your current route, institution, and category before relying on a threshold.
Frequently asked questions
Does a US 3.0 GPA equal 3.0 on the MEXT scale?
You cannot determine that from the overall GPA. Even the letter B receives 3 points in the A/B/C/D/F pattern but 2 in the S/A/B/C/F and A/B/C/F patterns. Use the approved mapping for the transcript.
Can I multiply my overall GPA by 3/4?
That rescales the maximum but does not apply the course-grade table. Enter the required course results instead.
What if my GPA is just below 2.30?
Check the grades, weights, and required academic period. Do not change the mapping or omit failures to raise the result. Request clarification from the institution when its instructions are unclear.
Can I enter total credits for each grade band?
Yes. For a credit-weighted calculation, one row with all credits assigned 3 points gives the same arithmetic result as separate rows with those points. In course-count mode, enter each course separately.
For the wider application process, read the MEXT scholarship guide and verify requirements with your embassy or host university.
The cited 2026 documents support this method; they are not a claim about every future intake. This independent tool is not endorsed by MEXT.
