Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships 2024-2025 are partially funded scholarships for international students. These scholarships are available for undergraduate and masters. Up to 6 Scholarships will be awarded annually and will be of the value of up to $3,000 each for postgraduate and undergraduate study.

An Award to support University of Auckland students and graduates enrolling in a US university and US citizens and permanent residents to study at the University of Auckland.

The University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship was established in 2016. The main purpose of the Scholarship is to attract new international students of high caliber to enroll in undergraduate or postgraduate taught study of one year or more at the University of Auckland.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university in the QS World University Rankings 2020. Placed =81st  in the world, the University is the only New Zealand university in the top 100.

The University of Auckland is also the highest ranked university in New Zealand for its global reputation amongst both academics and employers. Worldwide. The University ranks #59 for Academic and #141 for Employer Reputation.

The Award was established in 2013 and is funded by Friends of the University of Auckland (US). The main purpose of the Award is to encourage academic exchanges between New Zealand and the United States of America.

Eligibility Criteria for Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships

To qualify for Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships, candidate must fulfill all of the following requirements below:

  • Required Language: English.
  • Eligible Countries: University of Auckland student / US resident
  • The Award shall be known as the Friends of the University of Auckland US/ NZ Exchange Award.Up to six Awards will be awarded annually, each for a period of one year, and will be of a value from $1,000 to
  • $3,000 NZD depending on funding availability. Up to three Awards will be available to outbound students, and up to three for inbound students, depending on the funding and quality of the applicants.
  • To be eligible for an inbound Award, an applicant must i) be a US citizen or permanent resident and ii) have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time enrolment in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or diploma or a Certificate of Proficiency (COPOS or COPEX) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland. A US grade point average (GPA) of not less than 3.7 (where 4 is an ‘A’ grade) is required for Award consideration.
  • To be eligible for an outbound Award, an applicant must i) be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, ii) have completed or be working towards completion of the academic requirements of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (and may or may not have graduated) by the closing date, and iii) have been offered postgraduate or undergraduate enrolment or who have been accepted for an approved exchange or short-term programme at a US university of at least equal standing to Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (See Note II). A GPA of not less than 7.4 is required for Award consideration.
  • The basis of selection will be academic merit, and the applicant’s personal qualities as assessed by a personal statement.
  • The Award will be made by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising two representatives of the International Committee nominated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Engagement) and one representative of Alumni Relations & Development.
  • The Award will be paid in one instalment upon confirmation of enrolment in a degree, diploma or Certificate of Proficiency (COPOS or COPEX) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (inbound Award) or in an postgraduate or undergraduate programme, or approved exchange or short-term programme at a US university (outbound Award) (see Notes III and IV).
  • The Award may be held concurrently with any other scholarship, award or grant as long as the regulations for that scholarship, award or grant permit and the University of Auckland Council is informed and approves. It is the responsibility of the awardee to declare to the Scholarships Office all other scholarships, awards or grant funding received and for which the awardee receives payment while also in payment for this Award.
  • The University of Auckland Council is not obliged to make an award if it is determined there is no candidate that meets the criteria and/or no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • The University of Auckland Council can amend or vary these Regulations, in consultation with the Donor, provided that there is no departure from the main purpose of the Award.
  • Applications close with the Scholarships Office on 15 August for students enrolling in Semester Two of the current year at the University of Auckland or US fall semester and 6 November for students enrolling in Semester One of the following year at the University of Auckland or US winter/spring semester.
  • Notes [I]-[V] below are deemed to be regulations.

Notes

  • The tax-free status of this Scholarship is under current legislation. The University of Auckland cannot guarantee this tax-free outcome.
  • The standing of the US institution will be assessed by reference to current well-recognised university ranking tables (such as The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings).
  • Awardees of an outbound Award must register their travel plans with 360 International in accordance with the Guidelines for students travelling overseas (refer to https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/students/forms-policies-andguidelines/student-policies-and-guidelines/student-travel-guidelines.html).
  • Payments under the terms of this Award remain tax-free as long as they are used for the payment of costs associated with an awardee’s programme of study and/or to assist the awardee with living costs while studying. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in the termination of the Award.
  • Awardees will be required to comply with the regulations for the Award and must notify the Scholarships Office of any change in their enrolment or funding status. Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland may, in the event that it can be established that an awardee is not complying with these regulations, terminate the Award and require repayment of the funds received.
